European hake
(Merluccius merluccius)
Overview
Hake belongs to a group of fish known collectively as Merluccidae. There is only one species, European hake, found in European seas. European hake is widely distributed over the Northeast Atlantic shelf. Hake is a top predator and cannibalistic. It is a late maturing fish, spawning from February to July in northern waters. There are two major nursery areas: the Bay of Biscay and off southern Ireland. As they approach maturity, hake move into deeper waters offshore. Hake can attain a length of 100-180 cm, with a weight of 11-15 kg. Females mature at 5-6 years at about 50 cm.

Northern stock (North Sea, Celtic Seas, Bay of Biscay (north)) - Wild-caught
Location: Bay of Biscay
Capture methods: Net (gill or fixed), Net (pelagic trawl)
Northern hake is not overfished and not subject to overfishing. Emergency management of this stock in 2001 has recovered it to very good levels. Ongoing management measures appear to be controlling the fishery, but there is an unsustainable bycatch of common dolphin and harbour porpoise in the Bay of Biscay. Gillnetting and pair trawling for hake are among the fisheries responsible.Rating last updated July 2023.
Northern stock (North Sea, Celtic Seas, Bay of Biscay (north)) - Wild-caught
Location: North Sea and Celtic Seas
Capture methods: Bottom trawl (otter)
Northern hake is not overfished and not subject to overfishing. Emergency management of this stock in 2001 has recovered it to very good levels. Ongoing management measures appear to be controlling the fishery, but discarding can be an issue in some areas and catch limits do not cover all of the countries accessing the stock. Some hake catches are by otter trawls, which are likely to cause some damage to the seabed. Bycatch is moderate and may include vulnerable species such as North Sea cod and blue and flapper skate.Rating last updated July 2022.
Northern stock (North Sea, Celtic Seas, Bay of Biscay (north)) - Wild-caught
Location: North Sea and Celtic Seas
Capture methods: Hook & line (longline)
Northern hake is not overfished and not subject to overfishing. Emergency management of this stock in 2001 has recovered it to very good levels. Ongoing management measures appear to be controlling the fishery, but discarding can be an issue in some areas and catch limits do not cover all of the countries accessing the stock. Some hake is caught by longlining. Longlining can have a bycatch of vulnerable species such as sharks and seabirds, and may be contributing to the population decline of fulmars.Rating last updated July 2022.
