Production method: Open net pen, marine
Rainbow trout feed is traceable and requirements are in place for responsible ingredient sourcing, however, it is a net consumer of protein. Farming in marine net pens can have a negative environmental impact such as sea lice, disease outbreaks and escapes. However, there is no use of freshwater supplies and habitat alteration is small. Chemical usage is regulated and there are practices in place for welfare and humane slaughter. Management and regulations are in place.Rating last updated June 2022.

Production method: Pond, freshwater
Rainbow trout farmed in freshwater ponds and raceways is a good choice. The use of freshwater enclosed systems addresses many issues of environmental concern that can be associated with farmed fish production such as organic and chemical waste deposition, escapes and spread of parasites. Rainbow trout has a lower requirement for fish in its diet compared to other salmonid species and in UK production, responsibly sourced feed is used. This assessment also scores well for welfare and management.Rating last updated May 2022.

GLOBALG.A.P. farmed rainbow trout is well managed and management is thought to be mostly effective. The standard mitigates many areas of environmental concern in open net pen aquaculture, including discharge of effluents, use of chemicals, disease and parasite interactions. However, escapes of farmed rainbow trout from marine net pens may still occur. The GLOBALG.A.P. standard has criteria in place for welfare and humane slaughter. However, lethal control of predators is permitted. The GLOBALG.A.P. feed standard has criteria in place for responsible sourcing for both marine and terrestrial ingredients, however, rainbow trout are net consumers of protein. This rating is based on full compliance with certification requirements. Commercial buyers should therefore ensure that full compliance has been achieved in order for this rating to be applicable.Rating last updated: November 2022
