Rating summary

The population of albacore tuna in the south Pacific Ocean is at a healthy size. Few appropriate management measures are in place for the stock, but the certified fisheries are addressing this through additional monitoring and regulation. Almost all catches are by longlining. Longlining can have a bycatch of vulnerable species, but certified fisheries have taken steps to reduce their impacts.Rating last updated January 2022.

Technical consultation summary

The most recent stock assessment for albacore tuna in the south Pacific Ocean is from 2021 and indicated that the stock is not overfished and not subject to overfishing. Spawning biomass is approximately 3 times SBMSY, and F is 24% of FMSY. However, the stock is thought to be declining, and is projected to continue to decline under current catch rates. Few appropriate management measures are in place in the uncertified fishery, but certified fisheries have introduced additional measures, e.g. catch and effort limits in some areas, and improved observer coverage. Almost all of the albacore catches in the south Pacific Ocean are by longlining, which can have a bycatch of vulnerable species. Measures by the certified fleets have reduced some concerns, but there are conditions in some areas to improve monitoring and mitigation.
