Rating summary

Fishing in the Skagerrak and Kattegat can catch the highly depleted Western Baltic herring stock. For this reason, scientific advice is for no targeted herring fishing in this area. This advice has not been followed. Any herring caught from here is a Fish to Avoid.Rating last updated June 2025.

Technical consultation summary

This is a default red rating. Although the stock is in a good state, bycatch in this area includes Western Baltic Spring Spawning (WBSS) herring which is recommended to have zero catch as it is at critical levels. As scientific advice for a zero TAC for North Sea Autumn Spawning (NSAS) herring in Skaggerak and Kattegat has not been followed, it is likely that catches of herring from this area are having a serious impact in the WBSS stock.
