Lesser spotted dogfish
Scyliorhinus canicula
Also known as: Small-spotted catshark, Rock Salmon, Huss
Overview
Lesser spotted dogfish from the North Sea and eastern English Channel are Fish to Avoid. Dogfish from the western UK are OK but improvements are needed. There is little management in place and not much is known about the population.Multiple species of small shark are often sold under generic names like ‘rock salmon’, ‘rock’, or ‘huss’, so it’s important to know which species you’re buying. If you don’t know the species you’re buying, it’s best to avoid eating it. Lesser‑spotted dogfish is sometimes sold in UK supermarkets, but is more commonly available from fishmongers, fish and chip shops, and seafood restaurants under these generic names.
