Overview

The sustainability of native, or flat, oysters varies a lot. Always check whether they are farmed or from the wild. Farmed native oysters are a Best Choice. Wild native oysters Need Improvement, as populations are in trouble throughout Europe. Harvesting of native oysters in the UK is relatively limited, so they are rarely found in supermarkets, but may be offered in local seafood restaurants or fishmongers. Consumers are more likely to encounter Pacific Oysters, a different species which is considered a Best Choice when farmed.
